Snake Strategy: How to Survive Longer and Score Big

June 17, 2026

Snake is the rare game where the difficulty is entirely self-inflicted: the longer you survive, the longer your tail grows, and the harder it becomes to avoid running into yourself. Beating your best score is less about reflexes and more about planning your route so you never paint yourself into a corner.

Think in paths, not steps

The snake moves on a fixed timer and cannot stop, so reacting one square at a time is a losing strategy. Before you turn toward a piece of food, make sure there is still a clear way out afterwards. A good habit is to always know where your next two or three turns will go before you reach the food.

Fill the board in tidy rows

Expert players use a back-and-forth pattern, sweeping the board like mowing a lawn: across one row, down one cell, back across the next. This “boustrophedon” keeps your tail neatly stacked and leaves predictable gaps you can always slip into, which is what lets very long snakes keep going.

Use the walls to your advantage

On Easy mode the walls wrap around, so driving off one edge brings you back on the opposite side — handy shortcuts, but remember your tail wraps too. On Medium and Hard the walls are deadly, so hug the perimeter early while the snake is short and save the open centre for later, when you will desperately need room to manoeuvre.

Always leave an exit

The single rule that prevents most deaths: never enter a space you cannot get out of. Keep at least one clear escape route behind your head at all times. The moment there is no square left to turn into, the run is over, so trade a little greed for a guaranteed way out and your scores will climb.
